| Notes |
- (Research):DEATH: Conflict/Error> Dwnn's 'Heraldic Visitations of Wales' volume 2 page 109 footnote 5 states he was living in 1246 which would make the death date of 1216 erroneous.
- TITLES: Accession> to South Powys (Powys Wenwynwyn) in 1195. (Fryde, Handbook of British Chronology, p. 54)
TITLES: Prince of Upper Powys. (Lloyd, History of the Princes, the Lords Marcher and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog, vol. 6 p. 43)
MILITARY: Wars and Battles> Gwenwynwyn conquered Arwystli, 1197. (Lloyd, History of the Princes, the Lords Marcher and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog, vol. 1 p. 158)
LIVING: 1187. (Bartrum, Welsh Genealogies 300-1400, vol. 2 p. 56)
LIVING: In a deed dated 22 Apr 1246 he is styled "Wenwynwyn de Keveiliog". (Dwnn, Heraldic Visitations of Wales, vol. 2 p. 109 fn. 5)
PROPERTY: He succeeded in the estates of his father, except those given to Cadwallon. (Lloyd, History of the Princes, the Lords Marcher and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog, vol. 5 p. 43)
PROPERTY: After his death in 1218, his lands were coneded to the custody of Llywelyn during the minority of his heirs. (Lloyd, History of the Princes, the Lords Marcher and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog, vol. 6 p. 134)
DEATH: Died in exile after being dispossed by Llywelyn "the Great".
REMARKS: Helped Llywelyn drive King John from Wales in 1208.
REMARKS: In 1216 Gwenwynwyn receded from his Welsh alliance and made his peace with John, King of England, to the great indignation of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, Prince of North Wales. He was in consequence hunted from his dominions and driven into the county of Chester by Llywelyn, who seized his whole territory. (Lloyd, History of the Princes, the Lords Marcher and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog, vol. 6 p. 134)
REMARKS: A stanzas and ode to him can be found in 'Lloyd, History of the Princes, the Lords Marcher and the Ancient Nobility of Powys Fadog' volume 1 pages 344-347 (written in Welsh).
REMARKS: The term King can be misleading. In Wales till the middle of the 12th century individuals were styled 'Brenin' meaning chief or high one, and 'Arglwydd' meaning lord or master.
