  • Notes
    • Clement Bates, of Hertfordshire, England, aged 40, with his wife Ann, and their children, James, Clement, Rachel, Joseph and Benjamin, came to America in the ship Elisabeth," April 6th, 1635, and settled in Hingham, Mass. Clement Bates died in Hingham, September 17th, 1671. His son Joseph, by wife Hester, was the father of Joseph, who was the father of eight children, settled in that part of Scituate now Hanover, in 1695, and died there July 9th, 1740. His son, Joseph, married Mary Bowker, who died a widow, July 30th, 1759. Jacob Bates, the ancestor of the Thompson branch of the Bates family, left Hingham as early as 1730, and after spending some years in Bellingham, Mass., settled in Thompson with his two sons, John and Elijjah. His son, Elijah, spent his life as a farmer in his native town, and was the father of George, Tyler, Reuben, Moses, Elijah, William and Jacob. William Bates, born 1784, whose life was devoted to agricultural pursuits, married Sally, daughteter of Edward Joslin, whose children were three sons-William, Walter and Winsor-and five daughters. Walter Bates, a manufacturer of furniture, was born in Thompson, January 31st, 1814, and still resides in his native town. He married Mary Jacobss, daughter of Thomas Elliott, of the same town, and became the father of eleven children: Jerome E., Lowell H., Mary J., William N., George F., Julia A., John L., Josephine W., Frank J., and two who died in infancy. The coat of arms presented to the early English branch of the Bates family was for valorous deeds performed during the Crusades.
    • In the Baptist as in the Congregational society material progress kept pace with spiritual. Aversion to anything like compulsory rate-paying had always made it very difficult to raise a suitable support for the minister. After two-and-a half yeers of faithful service, Elder Crosby was voted forty dollars in payment. Ebenezer Green, one of the first deacons, had left a legacy of nearly three hundred dollars to the church. Liberal subscriptions from others enabled the society to purchase a farm"We, the subscribers of the Baptist society find in our minds that it is needful for every religious society for to have a leader or teacher in order for good regulation, and for the keeping up of public worship, and feel ourselves in soome good measure free for to provide a place of residence for our minister or teacher near our meeting-house, and furthermore we have concluded and agreed to buy of Deacon Jonathan Converse, his farm that he now lives on, for our minister to live on, so long as he or they shall give good satisfaction to said Baptist society, etc. . . . . . . In 1803, a new meeting-house was erected on land purchased from Noadiah Russel and Jonathan Converse, fronting "on the great tturnpike road from Boston to Hartford." More than a hundred men assisted at the raising, May 19, putting up a good frame, "40x42 and 22 feet posts, and having dinner, supper and liquor enough provided." Elder Crosby, Deacons Jonathan Converse annd Thomas Day, Captain David Wilson, Joseph Dike and Abel Jacobs, served so efficiently as building committee, that in the latter part of August the new meeting-house was opened to entertain the Sturbridge Association of Baptist churches upon its second session. Pews sold to ready purchasers helped defray the cost of the house. The "former lot with an old meeting-house on it" was also sold by the committee to John Martin, 2d. The offshoot on Oxford Gore maintained existence with some difficulty. After the removal of Elder Martin it enjoyed the ministrations of Solomon Wakefield, a member and licentiate of the mother church. He was a pious and godly man, but somewhat eccentric withal, refusing to accept the slightest compensation or even a friendly gift in return for his services, and warmly opposed to Calvinistic doctrines. An earnest and faithful preacher, he did a good work scattering seed in a field remote from other religious influences. Another licentiate of the First Baptist church was John Robbins, who also held meetings in his own neighborhood and obscure school-houses-a light in the far-off corner bordering on Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
