  Clement Bates, a tailor from Lydd, Kent, England, embarked from London, England for America aboard the ship "Elizabeth", captained by William Stagg April 6, 1635. With Clement, who was 40 years old at the time, was his wife Anna, also 40, and thheir five children: James (14), Clement (12), Rachel (8), Joseph (5), and Benjamin (2). With them were their servants, Joseph or John Wynchester (19) and Jervice Gold (30). Also aboard were Clement's brother, James Bates (53), a husbandman; Alice (Glover) Bates (52), and their children: Lydia Bates (20), Mary Bates (17), Margaret Bates (12), and James Bates (9). With the Bates families was the family of James Hosmer, a clothier, who was my 10th great-grandfather, along with their servants, Marie Dounard (24) and Marie Martin (19). The Hosmers are listed as being from Hawkhurst, Kent, England. Clement came to Hingham at the time that Rev. Peter Hobart and his followers arrived, and, on the 18th of September, 1635, he received a grant of land on Town (North) St. This lot contained five acres and was bounded on the N.E. by George Russell, and S.W. by Thomas Johnson. It was the fifth in number from Bachelor (Main) St. and was in possession of his descendants for nearly 250 years. In 1883, the estate, including the ancient dwelling house formerly known as the "Anchor Tavern", was sold to the owners of the adjoining land. A portion of the estate was repurchased later, and a new house was built there by a descendant.
