| Notes |
- There seems to be some confusion, among Joslin researchers, about this particular Israel Joslin. Some contend he was born in Devon, England in 1693 and married Sarah Bailey and had a entirely different group of children that included the Israel Joslin born ni 1719 who married Mary Brown and was the grandfather of Azubah Joslin. However, twenty-five years ago, when I began my research into the lineage, I found more than one source, including LDS Ancestral File data, that showed the lineage as I have it. I am not certain which is correct. All I can say is that they are definitely different and that the Israel Joslin in question appears to be two different people. I say this, as the LDS's Ancestral Files for each bears a diffefferent AFN number. The Israel Joslin born in 1693 in Devon is AFN:1B7L-MFV, whereas, the Israel Joslin born in Marlborough, Massachusetts on 7 April 1692 is AFN:GJ56-13. The unfortunate thing is that both have been linked with Azubah Joslin, who I KNOW is one of my ancestors. I know this because she married Ira Jacobs and their daughter, Mary Ann was married to John Bates, my great-great-great-grandfather. I have photos of both Mary Ann and John, contained in a Bates family album I inherited from my father in 1997, which proves that Mary Ann Jacobs was definitely my great-great-great-grandmother and her there is plenty of data to support the fact that her parents were Ira Jacobs and Azubah Joslin.
The question, then, is the proper origin of Azubah's great-grandfather, Israel Joslin, as well as her great-grandmother's identity. This remains a mystery and there seems to be some dispute, according to who one asks.
Some sources I need to check on this are:
"The Jocelyn-Joslin-Joslyn-Josselyn Family," by E. S. Wessler, which contains corroboration for Israel Joslin of Marlborough (reprinted by Higginson Book Company, Salem, Massachusetts in 1960)
"The Vital Records of Marlborough, Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849" (CD-ROM, Search & Research Publishing Corporation, 1998)
UPDATE: I have checked Vital Records of Marlborough, Massachusetts and confirmed the marriage of Israel Joslin and Sarah Cleveland on April 29, 1719, as well as Israel's birth on April 7, 1692 to Nathaniel Joslin and Hester Morse (or Moss, as the marriage record states). No other marriages were recorded for Israel in Marlborough.
