| Notes |
- According to Burke, the first mention of the name de Vere is by William the Conmqueror. Alberic de Vere possessed numerous lordships in different shires, including Kensington, Middlesex and Hedingham, Essex, where his castle was situated, and where he resided. He died a monk in 1088, having gone into the clergy late in life. He founded Colne Priory, which is where he was buried.
