  • Notes
    • Learned the saddlery trade in his youth and pursued it in Newburg. During the Civil War, he contracted to sell supplies to the government, employing seventy-five or more people. He lived a busy life and was successful and esteemed for his many excellent qualities. He was a Democrat and was appointed as Postmaster of Newburg June 11, 1853, during either President Millard Fillmore's or President Franklin Pierce's administration. His term of office as Postmaster continued through President James Buchannan's administration, ending in 1861. John died at the age of seventy-two.

John and Elizabeth may have had a 15-year-old son named James Alzona Rea, who died July 25, 1869. This boy was buried at the Newburg Church of God Graveyard, Hopewell Township, Cumberland County. His parents are listed as "J.A. & E. M. Rea."

According to the 1880 census, John was born in 1815, but other data says he was born in September 1813.
