| Notes |
- Was a farmer and a stone mason, like his father, who trained him in both occupations. When his father died in 1844, Robert and his brother John Allen Rea, of Newburg, petitioned the court to settle the estate of Robert, Sr., who died intestate. The court ordered part of the Rea lands to be sold to satisfy the claims of his heirs. Robert remained on the homestead in Amberson Valley.
According to Foreman ("Conococheague Headwaters of the Amberson Valley"), Robert married Anna E. Fegan, who is buried in Union Cemetery in Amberson Valley. However, other sources say he married Anna Margaret Stake.
They moved to Page County, Iowa after the Civil War.
Robert's grandfather Matthew lived with him during his declining years.
According to the 1880 census, Robert was living in Nodaway, Page County, Iowa. Anna had died in 1867 and Robert had evidently remarried, as his wife's name is given as Mary J. Ray, age 52 (1828). Robert himself was 64. Living with them was Robert's daughter Mary (Marietta), age 34, who was listed as Mary Hamaker (she married P. Hamaker the year before). I believe Mary may have moved in after her husband died (in either 1879 or 1880), as she is listed as a widow. Mary died not long after the 1880 census was taken and she was not yet 35.
UPDATE: According to Page County marriage records, transcribed by Pat O'Dell for the Page County, Iowa GenWeb site, Robert remarried to Mary Owen on August 28, 1877, ten years after Anna Margaret Stake's death. Robert was 61 when he remarried and Mary Owen was 49.
Robert was still spelling his name Rea at the time he remarried (according to transcriptions of the Page County marriage records), yet all of his descendants appear to have begun spelling it Ray, at some point. His son James Azel Rea may have begun doing so, as the same marriage records, from three years before Robert's remarriage, show his name as Ray. Either that, or someone else simply spelled it that way, as most people are inclined to do when a Rea doesn't tell them how to spell it first.
