  Found in the Social Security Death Index. The 1900 census shows Gerald, at age 3, living with Seth and Desemona Murphy, who are listed as Gerald's grandparents. Pearl apparently couldn't handle raising Gerald himself, as Eva had died of consumption just five months after Gerald's birth, leaving Pearl a single parent, as well as a widower.
