- Sheboygan Herald June 5, 1885:
On Thursday of last week, a respected citizen had occasion to go to Plymouth, to work a couple of days, leaving at his home his wife and children, and a relative, Mr. Finley Barber, who has been in a great many fights, at one time having had his jaw broken, and only a short time ago having been engaged in some kind of a disturbance at Mr. LaBudde's saloon at Elkart Lake, around which village and Glenbeulah he has resided off and on for some time; towards night the said Barber, in company with another companion who came down from Elkhart, prceeded to paint the town red, having borrowed a dollar from an acquaintance for the purpose. The two made a success of it and remained out until after midnight when they returned to the r residence of the people whose guest and relative Barber was, in a state of intoxication. The lady of the house had retired, when as is reported, Barber proceeded to her room and indecently assualted her in a brutal manner. The next morning thhe lady made complaint before Justice Wedig, and the accused will have a chance to answer for his crime, after he is released from jail where he is now stopping in default of payment of seven dollars fine and cost for disorderly conduct. He will be arrested immediatley upon his release which will probably be tomorrow and if reports are true, for a long or life term in the State Prison; a sickening feature of the affair is that he is said to have boasted over the outrage, upon his incarceration in jail, to his fellow prisoners. Much indignation is expressed at the conduct of the prisoner.
According to the 1920 census, Finley was living in the same boarding house as his recently divorced cousin Wesley. He is not found in the 1930 census, at which time Wesley had moved in with his son in Michigan.
