  Sam J. Johnson, son of Henry and Anna (Stumberg) Johnson, was born October 6, 1908 in Grundy County, Iowa. He was baptized November 22, 1908 at Fern, Iowa and later confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. He received his education in the Sumner Public Schools, graduating from Sumner High School with the class of 1927. On June 3, 1935 he was united in marriage with Lydia Becker at St. John Lutheran Parsonage in Sumner. The couple made their home in Sumner their entire married lives. Sam worked with his brother-in-law in partnership in Sumner Plumbing and Heating until retiring in 1970. Sam and his wife entered Hillcrest Home in Sumner nearly a year ago. He a member of St. John Lutheran Church. He had also been a member of the Sumner Lions Club, served on the Hospital Board of Directors and on the Sumner Municipal Light Plant Board. Survivors include a son, two daughters, eight grand-children, fourteen great-grandchildren and one sister. He was preceded in death by his wife on April 19, 1993; his parents; and one brother, Harm.
